The History of L’Auberge de Sedona
Nestled in the heart of Sedona, along the serene banks of Oak Creek, L’Auberge de Sedona has a storied past as captivating as its breathtaking surroundings. For over a century, this remarkable land has transformed from a working orchard into a luxurious retreat, embodying a timeless sense of beauty, warmth, and hospitality.
1870
In the late 1800s, this strip of land along the banks of Oak Creek was an apple and peach orchard farmed by Sedona’s original settlers. The fertile soil and flowing creek made it an ideal location for early agricultural endeavors, creating a legacy of abundance and natural splendor.
1982
In early 1982, Frenchman Janot Rocci began to develop a French Country Inn and gourmet restaurant inspired by the establishments he had known as a boy in his native Provence. His vision was to blend the charm of European elegance with the rustic beauty of Sedona.
1984
Construction started in mid-1983, and L’Auberge—translated from the French word meaning “The Inn”—opened for business in May 1984. The original complex included a driveway, 14 cabins, and the L’Auberge Restaurant, establishing the property as a haven of relaxation and refined dining.
1986
The Creekhouse, additional cabins, and The Lodge were constructed, expanding the property’s offerings. This year also saw the installation of the Hillavator, a unique lift that carried guests from L’Auberge to just above where the Vista Cottages and Suites are located today.
1992
Terrace on the Creek opened, offering gourmet dining for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in an incomparable setting along the banks of Oak Creek. This addition further cemented L’Auberge as a destination for culinary excellence.
2004
The Spa at L’Auberge was completed, offering a tranquil sanctuary for guests seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. While it has moved locations over the years, the spa has since returned to its original home, continuing its tradition of wellness.
2009
The Vista and Spa Cottages were added, along with a new parking structure and a pool, enhancing the guest experience with modern amenities while maintaining the property’s natural charm.
2015
Extensive renovations breathed new life into the Creekside and Garden Cottages. The Lobby Bar and the indoor restaurant were reimagined and rebranded as Cress on Oak Creek, a dining experience rooted in the property’s connection to nature.
2019
L’Auberge began an enhancement project for a reimagined Sense of Arrival. The valet area and porte-cochère were redesigned for seamless arrivals, and the exterior of the parking structure was updated to create a nourishing welcome for guests.
2024
L’Auberge celebrates 40 years of hospitality with mindful dining experiences, unique wellness opportunities, and the same spirit of care and connection envisioned in 1984. It stands as a testament to the beauty of Sedona and the timeless allure of thoughtful service.
